Music Themes Meme
Infected via
hamsterwoman and hastily thrown together before my lack of time/tiredness/the heap of other things in need of doing could catch up to me. So, there’s ten themes, which resulted in a list of songs that often wouldn’t even make it to ‘My Favs’ list in other circumstances, but overall they span from “love ‘em” to “they fit and I don’t hate them”. If I don’t tell the language and you don’t get it, assume it’s Polish. I didn’t bother with full translations, but if you want any, the offer is there. (And I’m rather hopeful someone’ll pick it. XD )
PLACE
For some reason, my first thought was “...from Syracuse to Cheetaway”, which is the lyrics of Ballada wagonowa (Railroad Ballad). And Cheetaway doesn’t even really exist, as far as I know... There are better quality clips out there, but this one has the original old ’70 video. :) those costumes! that acting!
Then I thought, okay, that’s a bit cheating. There must be something really about a place, not just mentioning names. Hmm... Warszawa (1991)
And even better, a Polish cover of the originally French Amsterdam (I wrote more about it here.)
Massachusetts needs a mention for my teen crush on Bee Gees.
And how could I leave out PotC’s Tortuga!
FOOD
Zasmażka (Roux; ‘90) about going places and eating stuff. :) The whole thing is rather nonsensical (“pierogi in Nairobi, piranhas in Tirana”).
Addio pomidory, a love song for fresh tomatoes. :)
DRINK Whiskey (1985). It has a plot of sort, too.
ANIMAL
Jaskółka uwięziona (Trapped Swallow; 1973) is a must. It has many performances, but this one’s my favorite, though not the original.
Then there’s Ukrainian Їжачок about a roadkilled hedgehog. Super tragic, sniff.
And then there’s Russian Конь (Horse) which I first knew from an even more epic Polish a capella cover having nothing to do with animals, though.
NUMBER
Dozwolone od (do) lat 18 (Allowed from (until) 18; 1968) is maybe not epic, but cute. “Even in your thirties, if you feel low some day, do everything that’s allowed ‘till 18 – laugh, sing too loud, have a snowball fight...”)
As a counterbalance, Mniej niż zero (Less than Zero, 1983) might be a protest song, but it’s too cynical even for that.
But the one I really love is 10 w skali Beauforta (10 on the Beaufort Scale; 1970).
COLOR
Hmff... *a lot of scratching head later* ...war songs like to go for colors, apparently. A lot of red poppies (grown from blood), white roses and gray ranks. Out of all that I really like Biały krzyż (White Cross; 1968).
And outside of war ones, I wouldn’t necessarily put Chodź, pomaluj mój świat (Come, Paint my World; 1972) in my Top 50 or 100, but it has all colors, including a rainbow, so it gets a formal note.
Greensleeves is nice, too, though maybe too slow for my usual tastes.
So... Red Hot! :)
GIRL'S NAME
I think you get your Polish citizenship revoked or something if you fail replying to this with Małgośka, so I’m just checking it off.
Alice is somewhat important to me for reasons.
Juliet, because Bee Gees again.
Roxanne is to me a very wow piece from the otherwise very meh movie.
Ievan Polkka (Eve’s Polka),sung croaked and instrumental. Quoting someone’s comment there, in Finland even polka is metal.
And finally try to stop me from including Meluzyna. :> If you’re infected for life now, I’m so very not sorry. If you're getting nightmares after this vid, congratulations, join the suffering club. Believe or not, it was a kid movie. (The singer looks great, tho.)
BOY'S NAME Cotton Eye Joe, so sue me! :D
I’m pretty fond of Alejandro, too. (Why, no, it totally isn’t a try to include something, anything from this side of the millennium turn, no idea what you mean.)
PROFESSION
Prząśniczka (Spinner; 1973 rendition of a nearly 200 years old song). The tune is supposed to resemble a meandering thread.
Furman (Coachman; written at least pre-war) Basically “I’m king of the world up high on my seat” with added “be a good master and treat your beasts well” as a general social metaphor + horse commands. And of course it's a professional opera(ish), badly posing for a folk piece. :)
Medytacje wiejskiego listonosza (Musings of a Countryside Postman; 1968) Vid's best at 2:22 ;)
Few Days or a gold digger who’d rather be on the sea. A cover again because of course. I love the moment when the choir joins.
Ballet counts, of course? Because those Russian sailors... :) Try and stop watching out of your own willpower, I dare you.
Aaand... Victory! What, it’s a profession, too. ^^
VEHICLE
While we’re at it, do ships count? Szkuner “I’m Alone” is about a smuggler racing with the Coast Guard (and forgive me preferring this Polish cover over the original :3 ).
And then there’s a super nostalgic Temeraire. (I tried translating it once, then
moth2fic read that, did a good job on hiding the cringe and even better in mercifully rewriting it, so it has rhymes and all.)
And then there’s this awesome tribute to Titanic (I wrote more about it here).
~*~
And up to two hours after posting I’m going to be like “ohshitohshit, how could have I not included THAT”...
