You're right, the authors I like have their magic 'next to' urban reality. So the different idea that you talk about in Griffin's work sounds fascinating as an idea, but not fascinating enough for me to read on in a novel without an empathetic character. I also found the writing style less than attractive but that's just personal taste and not a criticism.
